The side looking sonars have been developed for greater swath coverage, digital processing of the signals has improved the quality of the images and interferometric techniques have been used to determine the depth of the bottom features. A review of the systems existing today is presented. Documents such as graphs, block diagrams, images, maps, sections, created from data acquired at sea level suffer from a filtering or smoothing effect that restricts the representativity of the measured parameters and therefore limits their interpretation. The greater the depth of the seafloor, the greater the filtering. It is due not only to the nature of the measured phenomenon but also the characteristics of the sensors, to their operation and to the data processing....

Cobertura de los fondos y paisajes bentónicos asociados a formaciones diapíricas en los bancos de salmedina, plataforma continental del Caribe colombiano OceanDocs

Se determinaron las unidades ecológicas submarinas alrededor de un volcán activo de lodo en los bancos de Salmedina, Caribe colombiano, y se cartografiaron mediante video-transectos submarinos georreferenciados, análisis de la batimetría e interpretación de imágenes satelitales. Se describen la distribución, la cobertura relativa y los organismos bentónicos sésiles más representativos de las diferentes unidades ecológicas. La zona somera (0-10 m) de los bancos presenta 60 % de cobertura algal y 10 % de coral vivo; en las zonas más profundas (<10 m) la cobertura de coral vivo varía entre 33 % en los cantiles semiverticales y 55 % en las cimas de los bancos menos elevados; las especies de coral dominantes fueron Siderastrea siderea y Montastraea annularis...

Mapeo del fondo marino del talud continental superior y medio de Uruguay OceanDocs

We analyzed the acoustic data obtained with a multibeam echosounder during an oceanographic survey abroad the “R/V Miguel Oliver” in january-february of 2010. The aim was mapping the sea floor of the continental slope of the uruguayan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The acoustic data were processed with MB-System software, and then incorporated into a Geographic Information System (Quantum GIS). We obtained 3 m for 3 m grid files to describe small submarine structures (mounds and pockmarks), and also a topographic map of the entire area to describe large submarine structures (submarine canyons and landslides). Mapeo del fondo marino en el borde de la plataforma continental y talud de la Zona Económica Exclusiva (ZEE) uruguaya OceanDocs

Se analizaron los datos hidroacústicos obtenidos con la ecosonda multihaz Simrad EM-302 a bordo del B/O Miguel Oliver en la campaña 01-2010 durante enero-febrero de 2010. El objetivo fue mapear el fondo oceánico de parte de la plataforma y talud de la Zona Económica Exclusiva (ZEE) uruguaya. El procesamiento fue realizado mediante los softwares libres MB-System y GRASS GIS. Con los datos corregidos se obtuvieron grillas de 3 X 3 m para describir las formaciones del fondo y de 1/8mn x 1/8mn para realizar un mapa topográfico y otro batimétrico (con isóbatas cada 100 m) de toda el área de estudio. Results from the First Phase of the Seafloor Backscatter Processing Software Inter-Comparison Project ArchiMer

Seafloor backscatter mosaics are now routinely produced from multibeam echosounder data and used in a wide range of marine applications. However, large differences (>5 dB) can often be observed between the mosaics produced by different software packages processing the same dataset. Without transparency of the processing pipeline and the lack of consistency between software packages raises concerns about the validity of the final results. To recognize the source(s) of inconsistency between software, it is necessary to understand at which stage(s) of the data processing chain the differences become substantial.
